Cinnamon from Ceylon – on the women’s side

Used in the manufacture of aromatic substances and liqueurs, Ceylon cinnamon requires a long and delicate craftsmanship.

Everything starts in the Sri Lanka jungle, from the cinnamon tree the inner bark is worked, which once dried, has the appearance of a tube rolled up like a parchment. It is also processed into powder and can be distilled to make essential oil.

I followed the work entrusted only to women, in the city of Ambalangoda.

In Sri Lanka, women contribute to the country’s economy in various sectors, but their work is often not appreciated, they are underpaid workers and in many cases they are victims of abuse and torture. All this generates in women a loss of self-esteem, linked to the ability to contribute to the production process. As a result, he also feels his value diminish within the family and community.
